The Basics of Structured Cabling

Structured cabling is the design and installation of a cabling system that will support multiple hardware uses and be suitable for today's needs and those of the future. With a correctly installed system, current and future requirements can be met, and hardware that is added in the future will be supported.

structured cabling system is a complete system of cabling and associated hardware, which provides a comprehensive telecommunications infrastructure. This infrastructure serves a wide range of uses, such as to provide telephone service or transmit data through a computer network. It should not be device dependent.

We further define a structured cabling system in terms of ownership. The structured cabling system begins at the point where the service provider (SP) terminates. This point is the point of demarcation (demarc) or Network Interface Device (NID).

For example, in a telephone system installation, the SP furnishes one or more service lines (per customer requirements). The SP connects the service lines at the point of demarcation.

Every structured cabling system is unique. This is due to variations in:

  • The architectural structure of the building, which houses the cabling installation;
  • The cable and connection products;
  • The function of the cabling installation;
  • The types of equipment the cabling installation will support -- present and future;
  • The configuration of an already installed system (upgrades and retrofits);
  • Customer requirements; and
  • Manufacturer warranties.

The methods we use to complete and maintain cabling installations are relatively standard. The standardization of these installations is necessary because of the need to ensure acceptable system performance from increasingly complex arrangements.

The U.S. cabling industry accepts the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), in conjunction with TIA/EIA, as the responsible organization for providing and maintaining standards and practices within the profession. It has published a series of standards to design, install, and maintain cabling installations. These help to ensure a proper cabling installation.

The benefits of these standards include:

  • Consistency of design and installation;
  • Conformance to physical and transmission line requirements;
  • A basis for examining a proposed system expansion and other changes; and
  • Uniform documentation.

The industry standard term for a network installation that serves a relatively small area (such as a structured cabling installation serving a building) is a local area network (LAN). There are also metropolitan area networks (MANs) and wide area networks (WANs).

Structured cabling installations typically include: entrance facilities; vertical and horizontal backbone pathways; vertical and horizontal backbone cables; horizontal pathways; horizontal cables; work area outlets; equipment rooms; telecommunications closets; cross-connect facilities; multi-user telecommunications outlet assemblies (MUTOA); transition points; and consolidation points.

The entrance facility includes the cabling components needed to provide a means to connect the outside service facilities to the premises cabling. This can include service entrance pathways, cables, connecting hardware, circuit protection devices, and transition hardware.

There are six main sub-systems that are included within a structured cabling system and these include the entrance facility, main equipment room, the telecommunications rooms, individual work-stations along with backbone and horizontal cabling.

The entrance facility is the point where all the outdoor cables from the different service providers connect to the buildings backbone cabling system. The backbone cable then connects these to the equipment room and each of the telecommunication rooms.

The equipment room is the main frame and central distribution centre for the entire building and contains all the different types of equipment to be used such as the power supplies and protection, file servers, data processing equipment, phone systems and LAN equipment.

Previously, I have built networks over the years in academia, the hedge fund space, and Silicon Valley and can share some of the thinking that went into how networks expand.

There are two high-level approaches:

  1. Serendipitous: Place yourself in communities where you are around a lot of smart people with interests and goals that are relevant to you. There are some obvious examples of this like Harvard or a fast-growing startup as well as conferences and communities such as SouthPark Commons. But many other communities are out there if you look hard enough: for instance, the competitive programming world as well as early adopters of a product like Quora come to mind.
  2. Transactional: Ask for introductions to specific people that would be directly helpful to achieve your goals. Don’t wait until the goal has become a necessity. For example, if you are interested in bitcoin mining, find second-degree connections who are experts and get introduced to them. When you do get introductions, offer to be helpful to them and ask relevant questions. LinkedIn is a great tool for this approach.

Throughout my career I found that the optimal strategy is to mix these two approaches.

In broad terms, engineering can be divided into four main categories – chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering.

1. Chemical Engineering

Chemical engineers use their knowledge of sciences – such as chemistry, biology, physics and math – to solve problems that affect the use or production of chemicals, food, drugs and more, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). They often work in offices and laboratories, and nearly all of them work full-time, according to BLS.

Chemical engineers use their knowledge in the sciences as well as manufacturing to bring chemical processes developed in a laboratory to a commercial or industrial process to create products and then evaluate and improve those processes, according to the American Chemical Society.

Chemical engineers translate processes developed in the lab into practical applications for the commercial production of products and then work to maintain and improve those processes. They rely on the main foundations of engineering: math, physics, and chemistry (though biology is playing an increasing role). The primary function of chemical engineers is to design and troubleshoot processes for the production of chemicals, fuels, foods, pharmaceuticals, and biologicals, just to name a few. Civil engineers solve infrastructure problems. Infrastructure such as the Brooklyn Bridge, the Erie Canal and the Thames Tunnel in London were all made possible because of the work of civil engineers. Those are just three on a list of dozens of civil engineering landmarks listed by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

3. Electrical Engineering
