According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics in January 2018, 14.8 million U.S. workers belong to a union. Public-sector workers totaled 7.2 million members, while the private sector had 7.6 million employees in a union. Being in a union has its advantages. Nuclear power reactor operators: These workers control and operate nuclear reactors. They adjust control rods to regulate flux levels, coolant temperatures and power flow rate, and they operate energy distribution equipment.
Elevator installers: Elevator mechanics install, repair and maintain moving walkways, escalators and elevators. They are responsible for assembling elevator cars, connecting electrical wiring and testing new equipment.
Electrical and electronics installers and repairers: These technicians undergo extensive training to install and repair different types of electrical equipment for utilities, transportation, telecommunications and other industries.
Power plant operators: These are the people who control electrical power plants. They are responsible for controlling the equipment that generates the power. Power plant operators monitor the charts and gauges that keep track of the flow and voltage of electricity.

Education Requirements
Applicants for all of these jobs must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma.
